Butterfly House (Ready to Build!)

A simple and compact house with big views. We're ready to build this home for you!

All the service spaces are grouped -- kitchen, pantry, utility, bathrooms, closets, and mechanical room -- into a long "core" wall on the public side of the house that provides privacy and is punctured by the main entry. The two parts of the house -- public and private -- are separated by a "dog run" or breezeway that also acts as the main entry into the house. A boardwalk perpendicular to the "core" organizes the parking, the entry, and the rear deck and pool.

The plan is super efficient, with no hallways or other wasted space.

The Outpost

Nestled into the edge of a grove of live oaks, the house is a compound of three buildings, each housing the main functions: living/cooking/eating, sleeping, and support (laundry, mechanical, gym, and garage). The owner's office is in a tower above the support building, with a lookout deck on top of the tower. A cloistered courtyard ties the buildings together and also ties the compound to its natural surrounding -- the grove of oaks acts as the fourth "wall" of the courtyard. The courtyard has a fire pit, small pool, and bocce court. And a hammock! All rooms open to the natural surroundings, with windows, sliding glass doors, and porches, connecting the owners to the wild, bucolic landscape.

Agua Vista Ranch

Agua Vista Ranch is a waterfront estate surrounded by over a hundred acres of tree-studded hills and several natural springs. Every view from this California-meets-Texas transitional home showcases a unique snapshot of the breathtaking landscape.

Bliss House (Ready to Build!)

The conceptual design of this house is Asian-inspired with strong horizontals, an inward-facing courtyard, moving doors that open the house to the landscape, and a veranda (engawa) under the wide roof overhangs that provide a natural transition between the rooms within and nature without. Every room in the house opens to the outdoors.

In plan the house is horizontally layered from street to woods --- stone wall, courtyard, living space, courtyard, water, woods. The house transforms from solid at the street to transparent at the rear. The visitor enters through the stone wall, leaving behind the noise and bustle of the street and into the calm and quiet of the Zen garden. The eye focuses on the house interior, then past it into the woods through layers of glass walls.

The stone wall facing the street gives the house privacy while anchoring it to the land. The overhanging roofs with dragon rafters add a little mystery (and fun).

The Dogtrot Cabin

This hilltop retreat was designed in the style of traditional German fachwerk with a modern, open concept to enjoy uninhibited 360-degree views.

Alta Luz

A modern guest house set into a wooded hilltop landscape. Exterior materials and colors were designed to blend with existing trees and native grasses found on the site.

I’ve always dreamed of having a clean, modernist home, and I’m happy to say that Alice and her team at Atelier Cohen led the way to making that dream a reality! I couldn’t be more happy with the project, my house looks like it could be featured in a Kinfolk magazine. I expressed my wishes of having a clean, natural interior aesthetic and they truly delivered – the natural light in my newly designed home is to die for.
